Trastuzumab for HER+ Gastric Cancer

(00:03:01) Elsevier Global Medical News, 2009 Jun 2, N Osterweil

Dr. Eric Van Cutsem is Professor of Medicine, University Hospital Gathuisberg, Leuven, Belgium.

The addition of trastuzumab to chemotherapy proved effective in treating the 22% of patients with HER2-positive gastric cancer in the Trastuzumab in Gastric Cancer (ToGA) trial. Presented at the annual ASCO meeting by Dr. Eric Van Cutsem, results of this phase III trial showed a nearly 3-month prolongation of median survival (from 11.1 to 13.8 months) in the trastuzumab-treated patients, who decreased their risk of dying by 26%. Calling these results “practice changing,” Dr. Van Cutsem noted that this is the first biologic agent shown to improve survival in gastric cancer.
