Melanoma: 'D' Is for Darkness?

(00:03:05) Elsevier Global Medical News, 2009 Aug 2, K Wachter

Dr. Stuart Goldsmith is a dermatologist practicing in Albany, Georgia.

Darkness of skin lesions would be a better criterion than diameter for identifying early melanomas, said Dr. Stuart Goldsmith in a talk given at the American Academy of Dermatology’s 2009 summer meeting. Dr. Goldsmith believes that lesion darkness should replace the 6-mm diameter cutoff in the ABCDE criteria currently used for melanoma diagnosis. According to Dr. Goldsmith, dermatologists have not done as well as other specialists, such as colon and breast cancer physicians, in focusing on the detection of smaller, cancer-precursor lesions.
