The most urgent need in ductal carcinoma in situ research is the accurate identification of patient subsets that may require less therapeutic intervention without sacrificing survival or other outcomes, according to a panel convened by the National Institutes of Health.The panel also encouraged the medical community to address the issue of changing the nomenclature, in particular by eliminating the word "carcinoma."
