Adult Survivors of Childhood Cancer

(00:03:29) Elsevier Global Medical News, 2009 Jun 1, D McNamara

Dr. Paul Nathan is an oncologist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Despite clear guidelines detailing how adult survivors of childhood cancer should be monitored for second cancers, data presented at the annual ASCO meeting indicates that only a minority of these survivors are following existing guidelines. Describing a new analysis of the large, longitudinal Childhood Cancer Survivors Study, Dr. Nathan noted that fewer than half of survivors at high risk for second colon, skin, and breast cancers are being screened for these malignancies. Dr. Nathan called on oncologists to take a more active role in educating primary care physicians about long-term follow-up recommendations.
