Carcinoid tumors, which arise from neuroendocrine cells, usually are indolent but can be difficult to treat once the disease becomes metastatic. Because no approved cytotoxic therapy is currently available in the United States to treat patients with metastatic carcinoid tumors, intervention at this point is limited to symptomatic treatment with octreotide.
