Relapse remains an important cause of treatment failure in 10% to 15% of patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). A potential strategy for reducing the risk of relapse in these patients is preemptive treatment based on serial monitoring of minimal residual disease (MRD). This study showed that sequential MRD monitoring provides an effective approach for predicting relapse and an alternative to use of the standard prognostic marker, white blood cell (WBC) count >10 X 109.
