Approximately 60% to 70% of patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) have extensive-stage (ES) disease at diagnosis. For these patients, standard first-line therapy includes chemotherapy with etoposide plus a platinum derivative. Although response to chemotherapy is generally good (up to 80%), responses are short lived, at approximately 4 months, and median overall survival (OS) is only 9 to 11 months.
