Essential thrombocythemia (ET) and polycythemia vera (PV) are myeloproliferative disorders that can evolve to myelofibrosis or progress to acute myeloid leukemia. The JAK2V617F mutation may serve as a useful molecular marker of response to treatment in these myeloproliferative disorders, being detected in 95% of PV cases and in 50% to 60% of ET cases. Management of low-risk ET and PV includes aspirin for prevention of thrombotic events. For high-risk disease, hydroxyurea remains the sole agent available...
