Two large, long-term studies have compared the effectiveness of preoperative chemotherapy followed by surgery as opposed to surgery alone in patients with esophageal cancer. The initial results of the United Kingdom Medical Research Council trial (OEO2), after a median follow-up of 17 months, demonstrated that preoperative chemotherapy significantly increased disease-free and overall survival.
