Metastatic melanoma has a poor prognosis, even with chemotherapy. In a meta-analysis of phase II studies, mean 1-year survival was 25.5%. Dacarbazine (DTIC) is the benchmark treatment for melanoma. Some studies have shown a survival benefit of combining chemotherapy with immunotherapies such as interferon alfa (IFN-alfa) and interleukin-2 (IL-2), but the toxicity associated with chemoimmunotherapy is much greater than with chemotherapy alone.
