Patients with lung adenocarcinoma that have epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations in exon 19 or 21 are more likely to respond to the tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) gefitinib and erlotinib than those without these EGFR mutations. Since these mutations are more common in never smokers and women, many physicians prescribe TKIs at diagnosis to all never smokers and order EGFR testing only for women never smokers.
