Patients who are infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have an increased risk for developing certain non–AIDS-defining cancers (NADCs), which appear to be associated with immunosuppression. Viral oncogenes are the suspected source of pathogenesis for the AIDS-defining cancers (ie, Kaposi’s sarcoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma [NHL] and for some, but not all, NADCs.
