Carcinoid syndrome occurs in 20% to 30% of patients diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumor (NET). The syndrome is caused by overproduction of vasoactive mediators and presents with abdominal pain, diarrhea, and flushing. Ensuing carcinoid heart disease (CHD), which is associated with overproduction of serotonin, is a major cause of death in patients with NET, including 20% to 70% of those with liver metastasis.
