The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study was halted when a 2002 analysis indicated that the risks of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for postmenopausal women outweighed the benefits. In addition to having increased breast cancer risk, women treated with daily HRT had larger and more aggressive tumors, more frequent abnormal mammogram results, and more breast biopsies than their placebo-treated counterparts.
