In primary systemic amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis, clonal plasma cells produce monoclonal light chain from which amyloid fibrils are derived. These amyloid fibrils are deposited in multiple organs and can influence organ function. Treatments for AL amyloidosis may be based on the experience with treatments used for multiple myeloma, although in patients with AL amyloidosis, such treatments may be associated with significant toxicity or slow response.
