Carcinoid tumors, which are neuroendocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and bronchus, show low response rates to chemotherapy. Octreotide controls carcinoid symptoms such as diarrhea and flushing for a median of 13 months, but it has shown no effect on survival. 90Y-DOTA-tyr3-octreotide (90Y-edotreotide) binds with high affinity to somatostatin receptors; the yttrium-90 molecule it contains is a high-energy beta emitter.
