Recent advances in the treatment of pulmonary adenocarcinoma have increased the need for accurate typing of non–small cell carcinomas. Immunohistochemistry for thyroid transcription factor-1 is widely used in the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinomas because it marks approximately 75% of lung adenocarcinomas and is negative in most squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas of other organs.
